Challenge

Our client is an emerging startup in the immunotherapy space developing novel technologies designed to enhance surgical oncology treatments. The company was hosting its first two patients within the first phase of its inaugural study when it sought external recruiting support.

With fewer than 10 full-time employees on its core staff, the company needed to add to its leadership team to effectively launch its clinical trials at its new Massachusetts laboratory.  At the time, the company did not have a dedicated human resources or talent acquisition department to source candidates for this groundbreaking clinical work.

Seeking a reliable partner who could provide the expertise needed to execute successful and replicable recruitment cycles, the company turned to Daley And Associates for its hiring and workforce planning needs.

Approach

Daley And Associates served as a dedicated consultant, providing the company with key insights to help fuel its recruiting strategy. Using a data-driven approach, Daley And Associates advised the company’s leadership team to establish a defined scope for each open role.

This consultative methodology was particularly evident when the recruiter adjusted the recruitment strategy for the new head of the laboratory position based in Massachusetts. After an extensive review, it was determined this position required hands-on processing experience, as the individual who would take the role would be operating trials alone in the initial project stages. While the job listing included language requesting management experience, it lacked detail on the technical experience that would be required.

This presented a challenge. Those seeking a role of this caliber would likely not expect to perform hands-on work themselves. The candidate pool for this kind of role was extremely limited, and Daley And Associates recognized that the title and compensation package would need to be altered to attract the right candidates.

In addition to providing the client with a series of data-backed recommendations, the Daley And Associates team also emphasized the company’s career growth plans in interviews with candidates. This employee branding effort helped increase interest in the open roles as the established growth structures worked to instill confidence in the client among the prospective candidates.

Results

The Daley And Associates team successfully placed three positions for our client.

The client welcomed a new medical director who is working with the Food and Drug Administration and additional regulatory agencies to secure the accreditation and licensure needed to operate a freezing facility in the U.S. This individual will also monitor the performance of the lab and its services, manage resource allocation within the lab, and work directly with patients.

To partner with this medical director, we helped our client place a new regulatory affairs consultant to ensure compliance with federal and state laws.

A financial consultant was also added to the client’s team. This consultant oversees the sales and marketing operations throughout the country, working with financial advisors, brokers, and potential customers to optimize the client’s business development and U.S. market entry strategies.

All three employees are still with the client one year after their initial placement.

Additionally, the client welcomed a new vice president of clinical development, a director of clinical operations, and a clinical research associate. A few select roles are now in the closing stages of the recruitment cycle, with the client’s leadership team having recently identified candidates who will be advancing to the next stages of the process.

The client’s CEO praised the Daley And Associates team, saying, “I am writing to provide exceptional feedback for our lead recruiter, who is a tremendous asset to your firm. She is delightful, professional, and dedicated. She has followed up with me on several occasions to assess what I’ve liked about candidates and what I’m still seeking. I feel as though she genuinely wants to fill our position with the best possible candidate rather than simply place someone.”

The client, thrilled with the progress, has decided to leverage Daley And Associates for future recruitment cycles.
