Interim Controller – Non-Profit – Hartford, CT
We are currently seeking candidates for an Interim Controller position located in Hartford, CT. The Controller will play a critical role in managing and overseeing the school’s financial operations. This role will be responsible for all accounting functions, leading the annual audit process, supporting fundraising efforts, preparing quarterly reports on debt, and managing budgets. The ideal candidate will have experience in non-profit financial management and will be proficient with Blackbaud or similar ERP systems. Previous non-profit accounting experience is REQUIRED.
This is a 3-5 month contract assignment that will pay up to $85/hr within a 40 hour work week. There is potential to convert to a permanent position for the right person.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee all aspects of accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and payroll.
- Lead and coordinate the annual audit process, liaising with external auditors to ensure compliance and accuracy.
- Collaborate with the Development team to support fundraising efforts, ensuring accurate accounting and reporting of donations and grants.
- Prepare and present quarterly financial reports on the school’s debt, ensuring compliance with all debt covenants.
- Develop and manage the annual budget, working closely with department heads to ensure financial sustainability and alignment with the school’s strategic goals.
- Maintain and enhance the ERP system (Blackbaud) to ensure efficient and accurate financial reporting.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and non-profit financial management best practices.
- Provide financial analysis and support for strategic planning initiatives.
- Assist in the preparation of financial statements and other reports for the Board of Directors.
- Supervise and mentor the accounting team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or CMA preferred.
- Minimum of 8+ years of accounting experience, in a non-profit setting.
- Proficiency in Blackbaud or similar ERP systems.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and non-profit accounting principles.
- Experience leading audits and managing budgets.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments.
