Interim Controller (Non-Profit) – Boston, MA

We are currently seeking an Interim Controller to join a highly respected non-profit located outside of Boston. The Controller will play a pivotal role in managing and overseeing financial operations. This individual will be responsible for all accounting activities, leading the annual audit, supporting fundraising initiatives, preparing quarterly debt reports, and managing the budgeting process. The ideal candidate will bring experience in non-profit financial management and be proficient in using Blackbaud or similar ERP systems. Prior experience in non-profit accounting is a must.

This is a 3+ month contract position with the potential to extend. It will pay up to $70/hour depending on experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and oversee all accounting functions, including accounts payable, receivable, general ledger, and payroll.
  • Lead and coordinate the annual audit, working with external auditors to ensure compliance and accuracy.
  • Partner with the Development team to support fundraising efforts, ensuring accurate accounting and reporting of donations and grants.
  • Prepare and present quarterly financial reports on the school’s debt, ensuring adherence to all debt covenants.
  • Develop and manage the annual budget, collaborating with department heads to ensure financial sustainability and alignment with the school’s strategic objectives.
  • Maintain and enhance the ERP system (Blackbaud) to ensure efficient and precise financial reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and best practices in non-profit financial management.
  • Provide financial analysis and support for strategic planning efforts.
  • Assist in preparing financial statements and other reports for the Board of Directors.
  • Supervise and mentor the accounting team, promoting a culture of continuous improvement and professional development.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or CMA preferred.
  • Minimum of 8 years of accounting experience, preferably in a non-profit setting.
  • Proficiency in Blackbaud or similar ERP systems.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and non-profit accounting principles.
  • Experience leading audits and managing budgets.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments.
